This decision of the initiation of the nucleus for the University of Zakho was taken by his excellancy Nechirvan Barzani, the prime Minister (5th cabinet) of Kurdistan region government (KRG) – Iraq , on 2005 to provide the basis and develop the needed infrastructure for a better and more successful educational environment in Zakho and the region.
The major objectives of the UoZ include the organization of university activities related to the academic and administration strategies for education and academic credibility plans as well as quality assurance and to place foundations for stable educational development in Kurdistan.

The university mission is to enhance the use of more modern methods in teaching and training students in different fields and to play a significant role in the development of educational , cultural , industrial , environmental and social services as well as conducting research in various disciplines in order to find solutions for existing problems.
The university vision is to encourage and back, by all means under its disposal, any interaction between members of academic staff or their research teams that is intended to initiate ties for communication, cooperation and collaboration with public agencies, private sectors, and national and international university research centers. We believe that these kinds of interactions are necessary for development and advancement and hopefully will make UOZ campus a comfortable place for learning and researching.
